Pinewood Derby Rules & Tips

Last updated Dec 23, 2011

This year's Pinewood Derby is scheduled for Saturday, January 21, 2012.  If for some reason you cannot make the race, but would still like to participate, please talk to someone else in your den that could race for you.

In addition to the speed races, there will be a Concours only event for artistic achievement held at the same time as the Pack open race. Judges will evaluate the cars while they are on the holding table after they have passed inspection. This competition is for the Cub Scouts who have focused on the creation of a racer for artistry. It is not necessary for a Concours car to race; however, the cars must meet the same criteria as race cars (height, width, etc.).  A scout may enter a car to race and another car for Concours judging if they desire; however, extra cars must be purchased by the scout at their own expense.

The Concours only event will also be by age class for the following identified competition classes:

  • Most original racecar design
  • Most original non-race car design
  • Best color and finish
  • Best accessories and or decals
  • Best Cub scouting motif
  • The judges will award one trophy for each category for each scout class.
Race winners from every rank can participate in the pack championship race.
A scout may win one Speed race and one Concours event in their rank.

Five winners from the pack race can participate in the District pinewood derby. The district race will most probably be on Saturday February 25th at Pender United Methodist Church.
But I will have to confirm this and send out another e-mail to confirm the time and place.

    • Height: As per car kit. Less than 5½ inches.
    • Length: As per car kit. No longer or shorter than the car as it comes out of the box.
    • Details: Details such as steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, on the interior of the car only. Cars with wet paint will not be accepted.
    • Inspection: Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Committee before it may compete in the Scouts Only competition. Scouts will have until 9:00 AM of Race Day to meet the inspection criteria. A Pit with extra parts will be available for last minute changes/adjustments

    Tips for making Faster Cars

  • Make the car as aerodynamic as possible. Slimmer cars tend to be faster in general.
  • Optimum weight placement is on top of the rear axle. (General guideline, you may disagree with this assessment)
  • Heavier cars go faster, so get close to the weight limit without exceeding it. You can go to the post office and use the digital scale; it is accurate within 0.1 ounce. Keep that much margin to make sure you don't exceed the limit on our official race scale.
  • Wheel alignment plays a key factor in the speed of the car. After you press your wheels in, let the car roll down a table that is slightly tilted, and observe how straight it runs. If it veers to one side, remove a wheel and shim with tiny pieces of paper until the wheel is properly aligned. Repeat the process until the car runs true.
  • Once you have everything set, glue the axles using hot glue so they don't move and graphite the wheels and leave the car until race day.
  • Welcome!
